'EVERYTHING LEADS ME HERE' - Karen Pallesen
After my introduction to abstract painting during my training at Hamilton Teachers College in the early 1970s, I have remained basically self-taught, though occasionally I’ll do a short online course with an artist that interests me.
I have followed the works of David Kessler, Brian Rutenberg and re-discovered Philip Clairmont. All are artists who have such freedom of style and apply paint with great enthusiasm & passion.
My preferred “style” is abstract/semi abstract acrylics on large canvasses. My paintings are simply a celebration of colour! I use vibrant colours often straight from the tube or pot applied with a large brush. I sign my paintings Karen Johanson using my maiden surname.
At present I am the Art Group leader at Otane Arts and Crafts and thoroughly enjoy working with like-minded people.
This Exhibition is a visual expression of my gratitude to the artists who have gone before me and have influenced and inspired my love of abstract painting. These artists include my tutors at Hamilton Teachers College (1969 to 1971) John Ford and Edward (Ted) Bracey, and all those legends of that time - Colin McCahon, Ralph Hotere, Philip Clairmont, Pat Hanley and Gretchen Albrecht to name a few.
Thank you so much!
