Vacant Frames Project

The Vacant Frames project transforms vacant shopfronts and construction hoardings into a vibrant, city-wide gallery, celebrating the talent and creativity of local artists. Thanks to River Star Holdings Limited and Hastings District Council via the City Centre Vibrancy Fund for supporting this installation by Hawke's Bay artist Michelle Fraser. 

Michelle Fraser is based in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand. Her acrylic abstract landscapes have a geometric influence. She loves colour, light, form and composition and is currently working on a series of loose abstract pieces. Her work, derives from the dwellings and surroundings that we humans choose to inhabit, often juxtaposing nature with human interference.

The Culture Canvas Mural Series

The Culture Canvas mural series began in 2019 and 2022 saw an addition to that series that was unveiled on the wall of the Sports Centre on Railway Road in Hastings. This work was painted by Dali Susanto and celebrates the diverse community that uses the Sports Centre.

Hastings Icons

Hastings Icons is a multi-site installation work by Adrian Thornton geolocated in Hastings, Hawke's Bay.  It takes images connected to the theme of great things growing in Hastings - people, industries, ideas - and turns them into large-scale screenprints on public walls. Each print is linked through a QR code to more information on the subject, located online and accessed through a mobile device. This coming together of a tangible image and a web-based experience provides satisfying interactivity for the participant. The full art work is not experienced until the viewer accesses the online content, although each element can be enjoyed on its own.
