Artist Profile

Stephanie Drew

Stephanie began working in Oamaru stone in 2001. Often words or descriptive phrases provide her with inspiration for her work, but she also draws on observations of natural forms and structures in her environment.

Stephanie has a great affinity for birds with their unique forms. Her Graphic design background gives her an understanding and appreciation of the effectiveness of simplified forms that are sensuous and evocative of movement or growth.

She enjoys the challenge of working the stone with hand tools as this enables her to create three-dimensional artworks that have a natural flow. More recently she began works with polymer clay and this offers her a chance to create three dimensional forms in a different way.

Stephanie has a Diploma in Fine Arts from Canterbury University and a Certificate in Publishing from Whitireia Community Polytechnic and work as a freelance book designer.  Before moving to Hawke’s Bay a few years ago she regularly exhibited at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, Wellington; Pataka Museum, Porirua; and in a number of other galleries around the Wellington region.

'Madame'

Artist: Stephanie Drew

Description: A reminder that during this time we have needed to take on and appreciate the behaviour and serenity of cats.

I began working in Oamaru Stone in 2001 and I enjoy the challenge of working the stone with hand tools as this enables me to create three-dimensional artworks that have a natural flow.

I believe that people should be able to relate to sculpture on a tactile as well as a visual level.

Most of my work is created for interior or garden and courtyard spaces where people can interact closely with the pieces, but I have also undertaken some larger works, weighing up to half a ton.

I have a Diploma in Fine Arts from Canterbury University and a Certificate in Publishing from Whitireia Community Polytechnic and work as a freelance book designer and editor.
