Sculptor Profile
Leanne Morrison
27 A Space to Breathe, Enamel paint on acrylic sheets
Two transparent acrylic panels in jewel-toned colour stand on their short edges, leaning toward one another at shifting angles. Their balance depends on relationship.
This work explores Va, the Samoan understanding that the space between things is alive. Where the panels intersect, light and colour merge, forming something that exists only in that shared moment.
The sculpture changes as light and perspective shift, revealing Va as dynamic rather than fixed. It asks the viewer to notice the quiet force of connection—the space that holds, shapes, and allows forms to rise together.
Leanne Morrison is a contemporary artist based in Hastings, New Zealand, specialising in striking, large-scale minimalist paintings and recently venturing into the installation and sculptural space. Leanne creates powerful geometric compositions exploring concepts of space, perception, and surface texture. Her work is defined by bold colour, architectural scale, and richly textured surfaces that reflect light and shift with the viewer’s perspective.
Leanne is inspired by the concept of the “space between”—a powerful idea captured in the Samoan word Va. As defined by writer Albert Wendt, Va is not a void, but the connective tissue between people, places, and things. Her practice explores this unseen area where emotion, interaction, and presence converge.
